A Dream Cruise Through Provence: Marucia’s First River Adventure

In October 2025, we wrapped up a truly memorable journey: our “Dream Cruise” that meandered from Arles up to Lyon. This time, it was extra special because it was Marucia, my partner’s, very first river cruise. While she’s no stranger to barge trips, dipping her toes into the river cruise world was a new delight.

Marucia found herself charmed by the rhythm of life on the Rhône. One day, we were off on a vintage steam train near Tournon, letting the scenery roll by like a postcard. The next, while I went off cycling, she was knee-deep in a truffle farm, her eyes lighting up as she learned the secrets of truffle hunting. Every new excursion was a tiny adventure and she soaked it all in with a big smile.

Here are some photos she took along the journey.

Some days were all about the simple pleasures of cruising: drifting through locks, watching the countryside unfold and enjoying the ship’s cozy activities. Marucia found herself a favorite spot on deck, just soaking up the views and the atmosphere. By the end of the trip, she was already talking about which river we should explore next – should we sail the Seine, the Douro or the Danube? We’d love to hear your thoughts.

All in all, it was a wonderful reminder of why we love these river cruising: These trips easily turn first-timers into lifelong fans, and they give us all a chance to see Europe from a fresh, gentle perspective.

  1. Marucia do all the rivers! I’ve done five so far and number six in December. Number seven is booked for 2026.
