It is one of the few German cities to have escaped significant damage during World War II, and as such boasts a classic, almost storybook-like appearance. Home to roughly 70,000 citizens, Bamberg celebrated its 1,000<sup>th<\/sup> birthday in 1973 \u2013 an age sure to be impressive to many travelers.<\/p>\n<h2>Your River Cruise Ship Docks \u2026<\/h2>\n<p>Bamberg is situated along the river Regnitz, which converges into the Main. River cruise ships dock near the center of town, and the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal is located nearby.<\/p>\n<h2>When in Bamberg \u2026<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Bamberg Cathedral <\/strong>is a Romanesque structure first consecrated in 1012. Damaged by fire in 1081 and rebuilt in 1111, the cathedral stands 266 feet in height, and is a must-see for visitors to Bamberg. Outside the cathedral is the statue, <em>Der Bamberger Reiter<\/em> (The Bamberg Horseman), though to date back to the 1200s.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Rauchbier<\/em><\/strong>, or Smoked Beer, is a local brew unique to Bamberg. The town\u2019s main breweries have taverns where patrons can sample the local beer, or indulge in a full pint. In fact, Bamberg is home to eight distinct breweries.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Altes Rathaus, <\/em><\/strong>may arguably be the most-photographed structure in Bamberg. It is situated in the middle of a bridge spanning the Regnitz.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The<em> Altenberg<\/em><\/strong> is equally famous, having been used as a residence for Bamberg\u2019s bishops and a prison until being rescued in 1818 and restored to its former glory. It is located atop the highest hill in Bamberg, <em>Altenburger Berg.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Walk<\/strong>.
