VIKING FONTANE Ship Review

""

Carrying 110 passengers, Viking Fontane was designed specifically for use on shallow rivers like the Main and Moselle. She boasts an unusually small draft of just 80 cm and a flat-bottom design that allows her to sail even the smallest river with ease. Along with sister ship Viking Schumann, Viking Fontane is the perfect ship to explore some of the most off-the-beaten-path waterways in Europe.

There are five stateroom categories aboard Viking Fontane:

  • Category A, B, C and D staterooms measure 120 square feet and are located on Upper and Main decks. These staterooms have two standard-size single beds that cannot be pushed together, along with a large picture window. The window can be opened in Category A staterooms, but remains closed in Categories B, C and D. All staterooms feature a bathroom with separate shower, a wardrobe, a small desk area, a TV with English-language programming, full air conditioning, and space under the beds for storing luggage.

  • Category AX staterooms are larger at 180 square feet, and are located on Upper Deck. These eight staterooms feature hotel style beds that can be separated if needed, along with more living space. A large picture window that can be opened graces these rooms, along with a full desk area, a bathroom with separate shower, a full-size wardrobe, a TV with English-language programming, and full air conditioning. Storage space for luggage is also available under the beds.

Located on Upper Deck, Viking Fontane’s Reception area is the gateway to the rest of the ship. There’s a small shop featuring sundry items just off here, and forward of here is the ship’s Observation Lounge. Featuring panoramic views and ample seating, this is the ideal place to read a book from the Library inside the lounge, or amble up to the full bar for a refreshing drink.

A 24-hour Coffee and Tea station is included here, along with an ample supply of fresh fruit.

Just off of this area is the staircase leading down one deck to the ship’s restaurant. Serving up breakfast, lunch and dinner in a casual yet elegant open-seating environment, the restaurant features excellent cuisine and regional specialties. While the restaurant is located on Main Deck, access is only available from Upper Deck – meaning those guests with staterooms on Main Deck have to traverse up one deck, then down again, to access the restaurant, which may be an issue for those with mobility difficulties.
