Big news this week as Celebrity Cruises has announced its decision to move into the river cruise arena. While some may not have anticipated this foray into the world of river cruising, it is a natural progression for a brand that has consistently pushed the boundaries of modern cruising. Celebrity’s entry also reflects the growing demand for river cruises, as more travelers seek to explore destinations beyond the reach of ocean cruises.

Known for its innovative approach to ocean cruising, Celebrity is now set to bring its signature style to Europe’s waterways with an initial order of 10 river ships launching in 2027. As someone who has experienced Celebrity’s ocean cruises firsthand, I couldn’t be more excited to see how they translate their strengths to the river.
Celebrity’s Strengths On The Ocean – What They Do Best
One of the first press trips I was invited on was aboard Celebrity Edge. I raved about the experience. Beyond its beautifully designed spaces, what stood out to me was Celebrity’s commitment to sustainability, modern but comfortable accommodations, and elevated guest experience. The ship’s eco-conscious design, from energy-efficient systems to reduced single-use plastics, showcased an awareness of environmental responsibility that I hope translates to their river fleet. Beyond sustainability, Celebrity’s approach to accommodations stood out as well. The staterooms were not only comfortable but thoughtfully designed. Looking back, the introduction of the Infinite Veranda staterooms on their ocean ships could have been the first clue that Celebrity had its sights set on the river cruise industry – after all, these spaces bear a striking resemblance to the balcony designs commonly found on river ships.
It wasn’t just the staterooms, though. All ship’s spaces were designed with intent. The Martini Bar in The Plaza created an evolving social hub where I found myself meeting friends nightly. Eden delivered an immersive, multi-sensory environment, and The Club surprised me with its interactive storytelling and entertainment. But enough about Edge. (Believe me, I could go on and on.)
Speaking of entertainment, I have to highlight how Celebrity continually pushes boundaries in this area. Though the partnership is no longer, I remember when the company first announced they would be working with American Ballet Theatre. I thought it was an absurd idea, honestly. Ballet on a moving ship? I feared for the ankles of the dancers. Yet, somehow, they made it work. Their ability to push creative boundaries is one of their greatest strengths. This is exactly what I hope to see on their river ships – elevated entertainment that not only embraces the cultural performances and local music groups already found on many river cruises but also infuses a touch of Celebrity’s signature flair for those who crave a bit more grandeur.
How Celebrity Could Differentiate Itself In River Cruising
River cruising is my favorite way to travel. In fact, I haven’t been on an ocean cruise in five years. But in terms of onboard innovation, it often lags behind. Celebrity has the opportunity to enhance the river cruise experience by incorporating its innovative concepts into a market that, while rich in tradition, has seen less dramatic evolution in onboard experience.
One of the strongest signs of Celebrity’s commitment to this new venture is their decision to build new ships rather than acquire an existing river line. This means that rather than adapting to a template, Celebrity can create a new river cruise identity from the ground up. As John Lovell, president of Travel Leaders, put it in a statement to Cruise Week: “They can build the ships with the Celebrity look, and though the size is different, guests will feel that sophisticated product they’ve always had on the ocean.”
A major challenge will be translating their signature spacious, multi-purpose venues to the more compact river cruise format. On the ocean, Celebrity’s venues shift from calm retreats by day to buzzing nightlife hubs, an idea that, in theory, actually works really well on the rivers. But how will they create that same versatility in a river setting? We’ll have to wait and see.
The Industry’s Take On Celebrity’s River Expansion
Industry leaders are already recognizing the significance of this move. As reported by Cruise Week, several key industry figures have weighed in on the impact of Celebrity’s entry into river cruising.
Michelle Fee, CEO of Cruise Planners, notes that Celebrity’s entry into river cruising is a natural evolution: “With the volume of travelers looking for a small ship experience, this just makes perfect sense for Celebrity Cruises to round out their portfolio.”
Similarly, Emerson Hankamer, CEO of Vacations to Go, sees this as an opportunity for rapid growth: “Expanding into river cruises is a shrewd strategic move… We can offer our millions of Celebrity past guests a river cruise experience on brand new ships operated by seasoned professionals.”
Meanwhile, Royal Caribbean Group CEO Jason Liberty has emphasized that Celebrity’s ambitions on the river go beyond just this first fleet of ships. In a recent earnings call, he stated to Cruise Week: “Driven by increasing demand from both seasoned cruisers as well as new customers, river cruising is a very fragmented market that presents an opportunity for us to win substantial market share.” The fact that half of Celebrity’s existing guests have either taken or plan to take a river cruise shows why this move was a natural next step for the company.
Celebrity’s New Chapter In River Cruising
Celebrity has spent years refining what makes a premium cruise experience truly special, and now they have the opportunity to bring that expertise to a new market. Their ability to create immersive spaces, engaging entertainment, and give wonderful service is what has always set them apart. If they can successfully bring these elements to river cruising without losing the charm and intimacy that make river cruises unique, then this could be one of the most exciting developments in the industry in years.
This expansion also opens the door for unique travel opportunities that combine both ocean and river cruising. Having a company that operates in both markets presents exciting possibilities for combination itineraries and enhanced loyalty programs. Travelers could seamlessly transition from an ocean voyage to a river cruise, unlocking new ways to explore multiple destinations under one brand experience. The potential for cross-market loyalty rewards and bundled itineraries could be a game-changer in how people approach cruise travel. It’s yet another way Celebrity is poised to set itself apart in the river cruise world, offering guests a more seamless and interconnected way to explore the world.

would love to find out if celebrity with have some cabins available for single passengers without paying single supplements. also info about including airfare or arranging for airfare
Hi, we’ve sailed few times with Celebrity & R/C.
This year will be onboard Reflection to the ABC Islands,v Western Caribbean and can’t wait as it will be just after my husbands retirement!
Have love all total of 14 cruises so far.
But sadly opted for a River Cruise for a change, Budapest, Vienna, etc with Newmarket Holidays and onboard ARosa Donna.
Scenery when we able too, cities visited, food onshore sampled & people we met all great memories. Ship far to many negatives to mention.
Would never use either company again, both so disappointed.
So looking forward to seeing what Celebrity will offer in their new venture.
Anyway, happy cruising to you all, bon voyage!
R and B, I’m working the Apex crossing in March and can’t wait to sit down with future cruises to see what they know and say. This is indeed a very interesting development.
