AmaWaterways Teams Up With Smithsonian Journeys

AmaWaterways has built its reputation on offering river cruises that go beyond surface-level sightseeing. Now, the company is taking that mission to the next level with an exciting new partnership with Smithsonian Journeys.

Starting in April 2026, select itineraries will feature Smithsonian-curated experiences, giving guests the chance to engage in expert-led discussions and exclusive excursions.

Why This Partnership Works

AmaWaterways isn’t just about luxury (though its accommodations certainly impress). At its core, an AmaWaterways journey is about discovery. Rudi Schreiner, co-founder and president of AmaWaterways, summed it up best: the goal is to help guests “connect with the places they visit” rather than just see them.

The addition of Smithsonian experts, including historians, archaeologists and scientists, will do just that. Instead of simply admiring castles along the Rhine or vineyards in the Douro Valley, guests will gain insights from specialists who have spent their careers studying these regions. This partnership aligns perfectly with Rudi’s vision, catering to curious travelers who seek the stories behind the destinations they are visiting.

What Sets These Sailings Apart

With 33 Smithsonian-enhanced sailings planned across rivers like the Danube, Rhine, Douro, Seine, and Rhone, AmaWaterways is doubling down on its commitment to immersive travel. Imagine hearing a Smithsonian historian discuss Roman influence in Provence or an art expert break down Louvre masterpieces. As a history lover, I have one thing to say. Sign me up.

Most importantly, this isn’t a departure from AmaWaterways’ signature experience. Guests will still have access to the daily choice of multiple complimentary excursions, and the activities and service that Ama is known for, but with the added bonus of Smithsonian’s deep well of knowledge and expertise.

A Strategic Move

AmaWaterways has always focused on learning, exploration, and connection. In an era where travelers seek meaningful experiences, this collaboration with Smithsonian is a perfect fit.

For those who love river cruising but crave more depth, these Smithsonian-enhanced sailings could be the perfect fit.

I’m already eyeing an itinerary. Who’s with me?

  1. Which of your trips on the Rhine and Danube do you recommend to see the most old most old castles?

  2. We would be interested in possibly participating in any of the Smithsonian cruises except the Danube. We prefer longer cruises or back to back cruises if any of those are included in these new themed cruises
