Editor’s Note: AmaLegro was retired from the AmaWaterways’ fleet in 2016.
AmaLegro was launched in 2007, becoming a sister to the 2006-built AmaDagio and second in a fleet of six near-sister ships operated by AmaWaterways. Carrying just 150 passengers in 75 staterooms, AmaLegro is 360 feet in length and features some of the most luxurious accommodations in the river cruise market.
AmaLegro Staterooms

There are six different categories of accommodation aboard AmaLegro:
- The lowest categories of stateroom are Categories D and E. They measure 170 square feet and are located on Piano Deck. They feature fixed windows and offer a sitting area, desk with Internet access and flat-panel television, and a bathroom with shower.
- Categories A,B and C are also 170 square feet, but are located on Cello and Violin decks. They feature all the amenities of the Category D and E staterooms, but with the addition of floor-to-ceiling windows that open to a French balcony. Category A staterooms offer a slightly more desirable location, being one deck higher than Category B and are located amidships.
- Topping off the accommodation choices are four Junior Suites. Located on Violin Deck, these suites are a comfortable 255 square feet and feature a full bathroom with shower and tub, a flat-panel television, mini bar, spacious wardrobe, and a full size window in addition to a complete French balcony. As with many ships, these suites can sell out quickly, so it pays to plan ahead.
AmaLegro Public Areas

Inside, AmaLegro features a host of amenities designed to sooth and entertain when you’re not admiring the passing scenery. She features a unique, 1.5 story library, a beautiful main lounge and bar, a reception area, gift shop, an aft-facing lounge, and a bow-facing seating area. The ship’s restaurant features fine cuisine influenced by local specialties and ingredients. Ample open seating is available on the Sun Deck, which also features a whirlpool and a jogging track.
River Cruisers Should Know!
- AmaLegro lacks the Single and A+ Stateroom categories found on her newer sisters.
- An elevator is available for passenger use.
- Complimentary bicycles are available onboard for guests to take ashore.

Not worth it mostly likely if it is quite a bit more expensive. Ama has a great product also. How much is the difference? —

we are deciding between the Amalgro(Ama’s) or Uniworld’s ss Catherine for a trip through Provence. Uniword’s is quite a bit more expensive-is it worth it if e are not big drinkers? Are the itineraries both wonderful? We are looking at April 2015.

What is the name of the terminal?
Do you have shuttle service from any Paris hotel to terminal & how much ?
My husband and I are taking our first River Boat cruise down the Danube in August and I’m wondering if the Amalegro has hair dryers in the cabins? And if so, what type are they? I’ve been very frustrated in the past with European style hair dryers.
Thank you for the comment Linda! I’ve cruised on AMA quite a few times and have always had a similar experience to yours, which is to say, exceeding my expectations. I appreciate that you took the time to remark on your cruise.

Just got back from a wonderful cruise, down the Rhine and Mosel, from Amsterdam
to Remich. weather was lovely sun was shining every day. The staff, so nice,
Artur and Palo were most kind always asking if we needed anything. Gabriella was
always helpful and accommodating. Mihal our waiter, very professional, his
service without flaw. Timea who cleaned the room, always did an excellent
job. Cherie Cooper planned all our excursions and did a wonderful job, thanks so much.
The chefs, superb, always something different on the menu always good
food,nicely presented and delicious.
I would take another vacation on this ship and
line in a heartbeat. We had a wonderful time ..The ship was beautiful and clean, everyone had pride in keeping it so. We would do another trip with this AMA line in a heartbeat.
Thank you all so much
We sailed on the Amalegro in August 2007 between Budapest and Nuremberg. What an amazing trip! It was our first cruise. Beautiful ship, very comfortable cabins, amazing food and very pleasant and attentive service. Would sail again on any of the AMA ships. We enjoyed very pleasant and interesting conversations with the crew. A lot of them were a bit shy at first but as soon as you showed signs of wanting to engage them, they quickly opened up and were very proud of their part of the world. We had a lovely time.
That’s when we figured out that seven days is just not long enough! But as an introductory cruise, it was ideal. We had planned 2 days pre-cruise in Budapest and 5 days post-cruise in Prague. What a way to celebrate our 25th anniversary! We have been on four oceanic cruises since then…
cruise ships are the best, they have their own live entertainment and some pools on the deck .
