Located in southwestern France and only a short distance from the city of Bordeaux, Saint Emilion has become popular for river cruisers.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Saint Emilion dates to prehistoric times. The town and surrounding area is also famous for its wines. Those who are looking for a smaller, quieter getaway on excursions will find plenty to love in this charming town.

Getting There …

Excursions are typically by motorcoach from Bordeaux, about 22 miles (35 kilometers) away.

When in Saint Emilion …

A few recommended sites and activities that we recommend.

  • Saint Emilion Monolithic Church – The church was built from a limestone outcrop, and a substantial amount of the church is actually underground.
  • Take a Wine Tour – Wine is important to the region. Take a wine tour to some of the different wineries and vineyards in the area.
  • Dine – Some of the most popular spots include Les Belles Perdix de Troplong Mondot, Logis de la Cadene, Restaurant Le Tertre, Le Clos du Roy and Le Table 38.

What Do River Cruisers Need to Know?

  • You will find that some of the locals do speak English, but you should have at least a basic knowledge of French, or a handbook or translator with you to make things easier.
  • The Euro is the currency of the region. Credit cards are also widely accepted.
  • Some of the streets in the town are steep and made from cobblestone. Sections can be challenging for the mobility impaired.
