Blaye, France is a small town located along eastern side of the Gironde estuary. It is only about 35 miles, or 56km, from Bordeaux. It is a popular location for the large citadel in the town, as well as for the wonderful red wine produced there. Although it is a small town, it has an interesting history. The location made it very important for militaries through the ages, as it was a good strategic point. In addition, there’s a legend that Roland, the hero Charlemagne’s nephew, is actually buried near the town.

Your Cruise Ship Docks …

The ship will dock at one of the ports that are very close to the city center. The location of the port makes it easy for travelers to reach all of the most important destinations in the area with relative ease.

When in Blaye …

Blaye offers a number of sights and attractions that should keep any visitor happy and busy during an excursion. The following are some of the notable things that you may want to do when you are on your river cruise.

  • The Citadel – This is easily the most popular location in the city, and one of the biggest tourist attractions. Built between 1685 and 1689, it offers a glimpse into history as well as some stunning views. Taking a tour is highly recommended. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Ruins of Chateau des Rudel – Another spot to visit is this castle from the 1100s, which is currently in ruins although there are rumors it might be destroyed.
  • Restaurants – The town has a number of excellent places to dine as well including Auberge des Officiers, La Galerie, Chateau Marquis de Vauban, and Le Carma.

What Do River Cruisers Need to Know?

Make sure that you’ve changed your currency to the Euro when you are on your cruise in this area. You can change your currency at most of the financial institutions and banks. You will also find that a number of people in the area actually speak English fairly well, especially those who are younger. Still, knowing and trying a little bit of French can be a big help.

The small town is quite friendly, and crime is not a large problem here. Of course, travelers will still want to make sure that they are using caution no matter where they might be visiting, just to be safe.
