New to river cruising and not quite sure what you’re signing up for? You’re exactly where you should be.

River Cruise Advisor is a trusted, independent resource for travelers who want clear, experience-based guidance on European river cruises—without the marketing spin. We offer honest reviews, side-by-side comparisons, and practical insights to help you choose the cruise that truly fits you, not just your budget.

Why We’re Different

At its core, this site is built to answer three questions better than anyone else:

  • What’s actually different between river cruise lines?
  • Which cruise line fits my travel style—not just my price range?
  • How do I judge real value once inclusions, rivers, and seasons are factored in?

Meet Your Guides

We’re a father-and-daughter journalist team who’ve spent decades cruising Europe’s rivers (and a few beyond). We built River Cruise Advisor to make planning clearer, calmer, and more enjoyable—whether you’re comparing cruise lines, weighing cabin options, or simply figuring out where to start.

If you’d like hands-on help, Britton Frost, a Cruise Planners travel advisor and longtime cruise journalist, can also assist with booking or customizing your trip.

Navigating the Currents: My 5 Ws (and 1 H) of River Cruising

Choosing a river cruise can feel like a source of “consternation and confusion.” In Europe alone, there are more than two dozen navigable rivers and a sea of companies offering experiences that look identical on paper. You might feel like you’re going upriver without a paddle—but that’s where my experience comes in.

In my thirty years as a travel journalist, I’ve taken hundreds of cruises, including more than 50 on the rivers of Europe. To help you “peel back the layers” of this industry, I apply a core journalistic principle I learned back in college: The 5 Ws and 1 H.

  • WHO is this for? Is the ship geared toward active travelers in their 40s, or those seeking a quiet, traditional pace?
  • WHAT is included? From “free-flowing” wine to shore excursions, “Value” and “Ultra-Luxury” lines define “all-inclusive” very differently.
  • WHERE should you go? The Danube, the Rhine, or a quiet canal in France? Every river has its own personality, wine, and history.
  • WHEN is the best time to sail? From the first “Tulip Time” blooms in March to the magical Christmas Markets in December—timing changes everything.
  • WHICH ship is right for you? I help you distinguish between modern river cruisers, intimate barges, and classic paddlewheelers.
  • HOW do I get the best value? My goal is to ensure your time and money are wisely spent by matching your personal preferences to the right itinerary.
