Viking River Cruises has the largest inventory of ships in the river cruise industry. It has 63 ships that sail in Europe, Russia and Asia. Viking also offers cruises on the Nile River in Egypt, but the ships are not owned by Viking and are also featured by other companies.

In 2017 the company will expand its reach to include cruises on the Mississippi River in the United States. Itineraries in Europe are available on the Danube, Dordogne & Garonne, Douro, Dutch & Belgian Waterways, Elbe, Main, Moselle, Rhine, RhôneSaône, Seine rivers and on the Volga River in Russia.

Viking Longships are the company’s largest vessels. These ships comprise about 80 percent of its European fleet. The Longships are built with the same specifications. It appears that all subsequent ships in this region will be built the same way, which is good news for Viking River Cruises’ fans. Staterooms overall tend to be larger than they were on its older ships.

In Asia Viking has three ships sailing on three different rivers. The Viking Emerald on the Yangtze River has the largest staterooms in all categories. By comparison, the Viking Mandalay on the Irrawaddy and the Viking Mekong on the Mekong River are much smaller.

Europe & Russia – Staterooms

With the addition of its Longships, all of Viking’s new ships have become standardized in terms of stateroom size. There are 45 Longships in its European fleet with cabins measuring between 135 square feet and 445 square feet. Average stateroom size is 205 square feet for all Viking Longships.

Comparatively, some of its older vessels have rather smaller staterooms which range in size from 122 square feet to 337 square feet. And on a few ships, the largest cabins do not exceed 200 square feet.

Viking’s ships on the Volga River in Russia have large staterooms compared to other ships that travel this waterway. Suites on the Viking Akun, Viking Ingvar and Viking Truvor are 400 square feet in size. And the most common stateroom size is 225 square feet, which is also large by industry standards.

The Viking Legend and Viking Prestige are the only ships in the fleet that have single cabins. Both ships travel on the Danube River only. Stateroom size for this category is 150 square feet.

Asia – Staterooms

Viking River Cruises offers itineraries in China and Southeast Asia. Unlike some other river cruise companies, Viking has its own ships in this region. The two ships in Southeast Asia, the Viking Mandalay and the Viking Mekong, have staterooms that are identical in size. There are three categories, but they are all the same size – 168 square feet.

The Viking Emerald, on the other hand, has cabins that are significantly larger than all other ships in Viking’s fleet. Stateroom size ranges from 250 square feet to 603 square feet.  The smallest cabins on this ship are larger than some of the suites on the European vessels. The size for the most common category is 250 square feet.

There are no single cabins on the ships in Asia.

Ships in Other Regions

Viking River Cruises offers itineraries in Africa. Travel is on river boats that are shared by other river cruise companies. The MS Omar El Khayam and the MS Mayfair operate on the Nile River. Stateroom size comparisons for these boats will be featured in another post.

Viking River Cruises Stateroom Size Comparisons

In the chart below, each ship for Viking River Cruises is listed. There are some variations in size among the company’s earlier ships in Europe. However, all Viking Longships are built with the same specifications.

In Southeast Asia, all staterooms are the same size for all categories. And staterooms on the Yangtze are the largest among all regions.

With Viking River Cruises, you won’t need to spend much time comparing staterooms on various ships, as they have become fairly standard since the Longships were introduced in 2011.

  1. Re the Viking Longship Category A cabins with a true balcony – does the 205 sq. ft. include the balcony or is the balcony additional to the 205? Thank you.

  2. Sorry but our second floor room on the Buri had only 135 sq feet. This was not acceptable. Basically only one person at a time could comfortably get changed in the room. I was very disappointed since this was our 4th Viking cruise.
