AmaWaterways Expands Presence In Colombia With Launch Of AmaMelodia

AmaWaterways has officially introduced its second river cruise ship on Colombia’s Magdalena River. The new vessel, AmaMelodia, joined the fleet on October 26, following the earlier debut of AmaMagdalena in March. Together, the two ships represent AmaWaterways’ continued investment in developing sustainable river cruising in the region.

Carrying a maximum of 64 guests, AmaMelodia features twin-balcony staterooms ranging from 237 to 318 square feet, offering views of scenery and riverside towns along the route. Guests can enjoy Latin American and international cuisine in the Main Restaurant, live music and social gatherings in the Main Lounge and a whirlpool on the Sun Deck.

“After seeing the incredible response to AmaMagdalena earlier this year, we are thrilled to welcome AmaMelodia to the AmaWaterways fleet,” said Catherine Powell, CEO of AmaWaterways. “Launching these two ships has been an extraordinary collaboration with our Colombian partners. Together, we are not only creating unforgettable travel experiences for our guests but also helping to build a sustainable foundation for tourism that benefits local communities along the river.”

The ship will sail two seven-night itineraries – Magic of Colombia and Wonders of Colombia – both designed to highlight the region’s biodiversity and cultural heritage. Excursions include a private performance of the Barranquilla Carnival, a jazz concert in the historic town of Mompox and a visit to Palenque, recognized as the first free town in the Americas. Each experience provides opportunities for travelers to engage with local artisans, musicians and guides.

“Seeing AmaMelodia set sail is very meaningful to me,” said Kristin Karst, Co-Founder and Chief Brand Ambassador of AmaWaterways. “Over the past three years, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with our Colombian partners and witnessing the incredible pride and passion that define this country. From its talented artisans to the warm communities along the riverbanks, Colombia’s spirit is woven into every detail of this ship.”

AmaWaterways collaborated closely with ProColombia – the country’s official tourism promotion agency – to bring the Magdalena River program to life. Carmen Caballero, president of ProColombia, emphasized the project’s role in promoting responsible tourism: “The Magdalena River is a symbol of national identity and a hub for sustainable development. Seeing how river tourism is giving it new meaning, connecting travelers with our traditions, landscapes and communities, reflects the type of tourism we want to promote at ProColombia: responsible, inclusive and transformative.”

With the introduction of AmaMelodia, AmaWaterways continues to strengthen its presence in South America and offer guests a new way to experience Colombia through its landscapes, music, cuisine and culture.
