We have been waiting for AmaWaterways to build another ship like its double-wide AmaMagna for years. Now, with AmaRudi set to debut on the Danube in 2027, the time has finally come.

AmaRudi will carry 196 guests in 98 staterooms and suites, making her one of the largest river ships in Europe alongside AmaMagna. But the appeal is not simply that she will be bigger than a traditional river ship.

AmaRudi promises more space, more dining options, a larger wellness offering and more places to spend time outside the main lounge. The ship will also introduce several features that are new for AmaWaterways, including Rudi’s Wine Bar, a dedicated game and entertainment room and a built-in barbecue on the Sun Deck.

The new renderings give us a better idea of how those spaces may look and, more importantly, how AmaWaterways plans to use the additional width.

A Look Inside AmaRudi

The Quiet Lounge is the space that caught my attention first. It is dark and intimate, with deep greens and warm wood, built-in bookshelves and several seating options. It looks like a place designed for reading, conversation or having a drink away from the busier parts of the ship.

That matters because the main lounge on a river ship often has to do almost everything. It may host port talks in the afternoon, live entertainment after dinner and casual drinks throughout the day. Having a separate room that is intentionally quieter gives guests another place to go without retreating to their staterooms.

AmaRudi will also have a dedicated game and entertainment room with billiards, a jukebox, karaoke and a cinema setup.

AmaMagna has a theater, but during our sailing, we often saw guests using it as a quiet place to work or answer emails. AmaRudi’s version looks more deliberately social and gives guests another option after dinner beyond sitting in the main lounge.

Journey’s Restaurant has a very different look from AmaMagna’s restaurants. The space is bright and colorful. It feels more playful than many river ship dining rooms, while still looking polished.

The stateroom rendering also shows one of the clearest benefits of a double-width ship: room for a proper sitting area. There is a full sofa, coffee table and separate chair, rather than a small table and two chairs squeezed around the bed.

Of course, renderings only tell us so much. But these first images suggest AmaRudi will have a distinct look rather than feeling like a slightly updated version of AmaMagna.

More Dining Choices

Dining will be a major part of the AmaRudi experience.

The ship will have Journey’s Restaurant, The Chef’s Table, al fresco dining and Rudi’s Wine Bar. There will also be a built-in Deck Club barbecue on the Sun Deck, while The Chef’s Table will serve new Italian lunch menus.

Rudi’s Wine Bar is named for AmaWaterways co-founder Rudi Schreiner, whose interest in wine and European culture inspired the concept. The ship itself is also named for Schreiner, making AmaRudi the first AmaWaterways vessel named after a man.

AmaWaterways will offer complimentary beer, soft drinks and a selection of more than 30 wines during lunch and dinner.

The number of dining venues is one of the things we most appreciated about AmaMagna. We could have dinner in the main dining room, book the tasting menu at The Chef’s Table, try the family-style menu at Jimmy’s or eat in the bright Al Fresco restaurant.

That variety kept the week from feeling repetitive. It also spread guests throughout the ship, which helped dinner feel less crowded.

We also appreciated the number of two-top tables in AmaMagna’s main dining room. River cruising is social, but even the most social among us might want to have dinner alone with the person we came with. More space and more dining venues make that easier.

AmaRudi’s restaurants will not be identical to AmaMagna’s, but the same basic advantage remains: guests will have more choice than they typically find on a river ship.

A Larger Wellness Offering

AmaRudi will have an expanded wellness area with massage treatment rooms, hair and nail services, a fitness center and dedicated relaxation spaces.

AmaWaterways’ Wellness Hosts will lead fitness classes and other programming onboard and ashore. The Sun Deck will also have a full-sized pickleball court.

AmaMagna already showed what the extra width can do for wellness spaces. Its gym had room for treadmills, bikes, a rowing machine, weights and other equipment without feeling like everything had been placed in a spare corner. And yes, guests actually used the pickleball court during our February sailing.

More Space, Without Twice The Guests

AmaRudi will carry 196 guests in 98 staterooms and suites.

That is more than many traditional river ships, but not twice as many. The additional width can therefore be used for larger accommodations, more public spaces and more onboard amenities rather than simply adding another row of cabins.

That is what made AmaMagna feel different during both of our sailings.

On our most recent trip, Ralph (my dad) and I shared a stateroom. We normally prefer having our own rooms, but AmaMagna gave us enough space and storage that we never felt as though we were constantly stepping around each other.

The bathroom also had double vanities and a toilet in a separate room from the shower. It may not be the most glamorous feature to discuss, but it allowed one of us to shower and get ready while the other used the restroom. Over the course of a week, those practical details matter.

The extra space was just as noticeable outside the stateroom. AmaMagna had several places where we could work, read or have a conversation without feeling removed from the rest of the ship. Rudi’s Café, the library and the smaller seating areas around the lounge all gave us options.

AmaRudi’s Quiet Lounge and separate entertainment room suggest AmaWaterways is giving those extra spaces more clearly defined purposes.

How AmaRudi Will Be Different From AmaMagna

AmaRudi and AmaMagna will share the same double-width concept, but AmaRudi is not simply a copy.

AmaRudi will introduce Rudi’s Wine Bar, while AmaMagna has Jimmy’s and Rudi’s Café. AmaRudi will also have the new game and entertainment room with billiards, karaoke, a jukebox and cinema capabilities.

The built-in barbecue on the Sun Deck is another new addition, as are the Italian lunch menus planned for The Chef’s Table.

There are still details we do not know, including the full range of stateroom categories. AmaWaterways says those details will be announced in the coming months.

Why We Are Excited About AmaRudi

AmaMagna remains one of the most memorable river ships we have sailed, not because she is large for the sake of being large, but because the extra space improves everyday life onboard.

There are more places to eat, more room in the staterooms and more options for how to spend time between excursions. Guests are not all directed toward the same restaurant, lounge or activity at once.

AmaRudi appears to preserve those strengths while introducing spaces that feel even more specialized. There is a room for quiet, another for games and entertainment, several places to dine and a larger wellness area.

That is the promise of the double-width design. AmaWaterways has room to create a river ship with more choice without losing the smaller guest count and destination-focused experience that draw people to river cruising.

We will have to wait until spring 2027 to see how AmaRudi feels in person. But based on our experiences aboard AmaMagna and this first look inside the new ship, there is plenty to look forward to.
