Quick Take
Riverside represents luxury without the white gloves – refined, spacious and relaxed. With a focus on flexibility, exceptional dining and polished service, the line delivers an ultra-luxury river experience that feels elevated but never uptight.
Riverside’s fleet consists of Riverside Mozart, Riverside Ravel and Riverside Debussy – sailing Europe’s Danube, Rhône and Rhine rivers. Each ship is suite-focused and designed to deliver a more private, high-touch experience on some of the continent’s most iconic waterways.
With spacious all-suite accommodations, a high crew-to-guest ratio and an emphasis on culinary excellence, Riverside is building a reputation as one of the most refined experiences on European rivers.
Our Perspective
Though Riverside is a newer company, after sailing Riverside Mozart and Riverside Debussy, one thing became clear: Riverside is not testing the waters of luxury river cruising – it arrived fully formed.
Riverside’s parent company, Seaside Collection, entered the market with ships already designed for spacious, high-end sailing. Generous suites, elegant public areas and an intuitive layout contribute to an exceptionally comfortable onboard experience. The service culture is equally polished. Many crew members bring years of luxury hospitality experience, several of whom we recognized from our years of river cruising, resulting in service that is attentive and anticipatory without being overly formal.
What stands out most is the intentionality behind the product. Riverside is not attempting to appeal to every traveler. Owner Gregor Gerlach has been explicit about priorities, placing food at the center of the experience. Chefs are given daily market budgets and the autonomy to build menus that reflect where the ship is sailing. The result is cuisine that feels regional and dynamic rather than standardized across the fleet.
The decision to eliminate the traditional cruise director role in favor of multiple guest experience hosts is subtle but consequential. Rather than a single personality shaping the onboard narrative, guests interact with a team across port talks, excursions and daily life onboard, ensuring someone is consistently available and reducing the sense that everything funnels through one central figure.
Evenings are quiet. Entertainment is minimal. Travelers seeking high-energy programming or production-style shows will not find them here. But for guests who prioritize space, culinary depth and refined service while exploring Europe’s rivers, Riverside delivers a cohesive, well-defined experience.
At the same time, Riverside is candid about what it isn’t. Entertainment will never rival ocean cruising. The experience skews quiet and refined. For travelers seeking high-energy social programming or Broadway-style productions, this isn’t the right fit. But for guests who see river cruising as a way to immerse in Europe while enjoying hotel-quality accommodations and elevated service, Riverside delivers.
Ships & Onboard Experience
Riverside operates three ships:
- Riverside Mozart – 81 suites, double-width design
- Riverside Ravel – 55 suites, Rhine and Rhône itineraries
- Riverside Debussy – 55 suites, Rhine itineraries
Mozart is the standout in the fleet. As the only double-width river ship on the Danube (aside from AmaMagna), Mozart offers space rarely found on European rivers. A wrap-around promenade deck, multiple dining venues and suites measuring up to 219 square feet with French balconies or larger provide a bridge experience for ocean cruisers curious about river cruising.
All ships feature all-suite accommodations with high-end finishes, ample storage and well-designed bathrooms equipped with heated floors, bidets and automated toilets. Suite categories range from Riverside Suites to Panorama Suites, with top-tier suites offering walk-out balconies and separate living areas.
Public spaces emphasize understated elegance. Mozart features the Palm Court observation lounge, the Waterside Restaurant, Atelier Café and Blue – a casual aft venue serving burgers, flatbreads and milkshakes. Ravel and Debussy offer three dining venues: Waterside, Atelier and The Vintage Room.
The Vintage Room is Riverside’s signature dining experience – an intimate wine-paired dinner limited to 12 guests and hosted by the sommelier. The €320 per person supplement is the only meal not included in the all-inclusive package.
The crew-to-guest ratio, essentially one staff member for every two guests, is among the highest in river cruising. Service feels elevated without being intrusive. Butlers handle in-suite requests. Bartenders craft cocktails with fresh ingredients rather than sour mix. Waiters manage both orders and wine service, eliminating the delays common on other ships.
Itineraries
Riverside sails Europe’s core rivers:
- Danube – Vienna, Budapest, Bratislava, Passau, Melk
- Rhine – Amsterdam, Cologne, Koblenz, Rüdesheim, Strasbourg, Basel
- Rhône & Saône – Lyon, Avignon, Arles, Viviers, Mâcon
Itineraries range from four-night samplers to week-long journeys, with seasonal programs including Christmas Markets and Tulip Time sailings.
Riverside also offers flexibility for independent exploration with the option to unbundle excursions from the base fare.
The Riverside Difference
Culinary Program
Riverside’s dining is consistently cited as the best on European rivers. The company invests heavily in food procurement, giving chefs freedom to source ingredients locally and adapt menus to the region. Breakfast and lunch feature live cooking stations and market-fresh ingredients. Dinner is a multi-course experience with wine pairings selected by the sommelier.
The cocktail program rivals land-based craft bars. Bartenders infuse spirits with rosemary, blend fresh ginger for martinis and craft lavender old fashioneds.
Service Without Stuffiness
Service is anticipatory but never intrusive. A white napkin is quietly replaced with black when a guest is wearing dark clothing. Still and sparkling water are poured into different glasses, eliminating the need to interrupt dinner to clarify who had what. Preferences are remembered without prompting.
Flexibility
Unlike lines with rigid daily schedules, Riverside emphasizes guest control. Four dining venues (on Mozart) allow guests to eat when and where they prefer. 24-hour room service is available to guests – a rarity in river cruising. Excursions are structured but not mandatory, and you even have the option to leave them off your cruise fare.
Pricing Tiers
Riverside offers multiple pricing tiers, allowing guests who do not drink alcohol or who prefer not to do Riverside’s excursions to cruise at lower fares.
