AmaWaterways’ new City Escapes program offers extended overnight stays and 24 or more hours in key ports including Paris, Amsterdam, Vienna, Strasbourg and Budapest. Departures are intentionally scheduled during quieter travel periods, which on a river cruise makes a meaningful difference.
Sailings operate on the Seine, Rhine and Danube beginning in 2026, with expanded departures in 2027.
What’s Different The core promise is time — more of it, and in the right places. On the Seine, guests get extended access to Paris, Rouen and Normandy. In Paris that means enough runway to visit the Monet Museum or the Louis Vuitton Foundation rather than rushing the obvious stops.
Normandy programming includes the D-Day landing beaches and the harbor town of Honfleur, with a cider and Pommeau tasting that feels like the kind of thing you only find when you’re not rushing.
Rhine itineraries include a stop in Colmar with a visit to the Bartholdi Museum, scenic cruising through the Rhine Gorge and an Amsterdam conclusion with time for the Rijksmuseum. Danube sailings lean into the Wachau Valley and Danube Bend with cultural programming in Budapest, Bratislava and Vienna — including a dinner and concert evening at the House of Strauss.
For guests who want to extend further, AmaWaterways has added pre- and post-cruise options in London and Rome.
The Promotion
To mark the launch, AmaWaterways is offering a limited-time promotion on select City Escapes departures booked between March 6 and June 30, 2026: up to $1,000 in savings per stateroom, a complimentary cabin upgrade and $50 in onboard credit per guest.
The Bottom Line
“Luxury is the gift of time” is the line AmaWaterways CEO Catherine Powell uses to describe City Escapes, and it’s a good one. The real test will be whether the itineraries deliver on the slower-pace promise or simply stretch existing port lineups across more days. The programming details — the château visits, the local tastings, the walking tours timed for morning light — suggest genuine thought went into the design rather than just adding buffer days to existing routes.
For travelers who have done a Rhine or Danube cruise and felt they only scratched the surface of a city or two, this program is worth a close look.
